Happy Birthday, 'Murica!
It's America's Independence Day today, and currently this is my favorite holiday-probably because L&D gave me the day off AND there were no anesthesiology didactics this morning! Total win for the day! FYI-for those that don't know, didactics are our daily lecture/exam prep/presentations/etc and for my program are held at FIVE THIRTY EVERY MORNING...being the neverending student, I actually really enjoy them....I just don't enjoy that time of morning.
So...what does one do with a day off 3 days into residency (which, BTW, is incredibly fortunate and I seriously can't get used to this)? For starters, I had planned a 7-9 mile run this morning before Dayton became the temp of the surface of the sun. BUT....I've been battling who-knows-what (Allergies I didn't know I had? Some kind of virus?), and my head feels like it's going to explode, so I think I'm skipping my run today and rest. In case you doubted me on the heat comment, it's 8:30 and already 75* out there. They say the heat index is supposed to be around 105*ish, which just sounds insane to me for Ohio.

With these temps, we'll probably take the kids to the pool mid-day. We joined the local rec center here and it has a FANTASTIC outdoor pool area. Essentially, it's a small waterpark. The kids love it, George can day trade on his computer, and I can slather my pasty skin in sunscreen, lay under some shade, and read a book. BTW-those weather screenshots above? They're from WTForecast app. You are welcome for this free entertainment.
So besides the pool today, Sam's Club is a must, as Costco has betrayed us and only carries JIF peanut butter here. ANNOYING, and yes, I also acknowledge that this is a total first world problem for sure. But, like our coffee now, we're also PB snobs. And we should probably meal plan and grocery shop for the rest of the week so we're not eating out darn near every evening.
Which brings me to my next point: EATING. George and I got real about our health and fitness in January. I had come to the conclusion that something had to change. We weren't inherently unhealthy, but we were both holding on to a few extra pounds from the past 10 years. Our eating habits were decent, but not great. After all, if any of you reading ARE an Oberg (or one at heart) or KNOW how we are....let's just say baking cookies and cakes and bread and all that amazingness is IN OUR BLOOD. I don't think there's ever been a time in the last half century or more that my grandmother hasn't had fresh baked cookies, bread, or sticky buns in her house for more than ~48 hours. We like our treats, and that got passed down through the generations for sure.
SO....George and I went full keto in January, cutting out virtually all carbs unless they were in vegetables. I lost 20 lbs in 5 months, and he's lost nearly 30. I've eased up on limiting carbs (so not truly keto anymore, just very low carb), but we still don't do pasta, bread, or much sugar at all. It has completely transformed our tastebuds and the way we look at food. However, our one BIG vice is/was pizza. Skinners are a pizza family. My #1 reason for wanting to go to NYC was to eat my way through pizzerias. Thankfully, George found fathead pizza recipes to make at home AND.....drumroll please.....we found RAPID FIRED PIZZA here in Dayton, who makes a "no doh" pizza! Essentially, the "crust" is a thin layer of parmesan cheese crust and then you load on whatever pizza toppings you desire. It's not pizza in the traditional sense, but it's delicious and holds us over.
Back to plans for today: Meal planning, grocery shopping, Sam's Club, the pool to cool off, and then we're meeting my brother, Eric, SIL Kelley, nephew Cole, and niece Sage, for fireworks tonight in their little quirky town of Yellow Springs. It's been so nice having family so close again. We've been able to celebrate Brady's 9th birthday with them and hang out for dinner several times since we moved. The kids are LOVING having their cousins, built in buddies, close and George and I are enjoying getting to hang out with Eric and Kelley more. For the past decade, we've lived a long way apart from each other and have only been able to see them every few years. Glad we get at least the next 4 years together!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!
